The publication, titled “Incidence of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw in Patients with Breast Cancer During a 20-Year Follow-Up: A Population-Based Multicenter Retrospective Study,” offers valuable insights into the long-term effects of breast cancer treatment.

This 20-year multicenter retrospective study analyzed the incidence of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in breast cancer patients. MRONJ is a serious side effect linked to antiresorptive therapy, which is commonly used to treat patients with breast cancer and bone metastases. Despite the widespread use of this therapy, population-based data on MRONJ incidence remains limited.

The study, conducted across all nine breast centers in Tyrol between 2000 and 2020, found a significantly higher incidence of MRONJ in this patient population. “Regular dental examinations are crucial both before initiating and during antiresorptive therapy,” notes Christine Brunner, the study’s lead author.

This important analysis not only highlights the long-term risks associated with breast cancer therapies but also deepens our understanding of potential treatment complications.
